Kalavryta is a town in the mountainous east-central part of the regional unit of Achaia,Greece. It is located on the right bank of the river Vouraikos. During the Middle Ages, the town was the Barony of Kalavryta until it was reconquered by the Byzantines in the 1270s. On March 25, 1821, it was here that the flag of the revolt was raised.
At the end of 1943, 81 German soldiers were captured by Greek partisans. Four Germans were killed on the spot. Three were later shot. The rest were initially treated as prisoners of war until most were shot dead. On December 13, 1943, in retribution for the killing, the massacre of Kalavryta took place. German troops ordered all male residents of Kalavryta, aged 14 and up, to gather in a field just outside the village. Then 696 boys and men were machine gunned. Only 13 survived. After that, they burned down the town before they left.
The settlement of Kalavryta is situated 4.5 kilometers away from the historic island of Agia Lavra.
The Little Church within the Monastery is where the Old Patras Germanos Metropolitan preached and blessed the revolution on the feast of the Annunciation in 1821.
The revolution's flag, which is continuously pierced by bullets, Catherine the Great's priceless diamond-encrusted Gospel Gift, the Old Patronus Germanos' robes, and a shepherd's stick are all on display in the monastery. numerous crosses made of precious stones and other significant religious artifacts. The 1600-old icon of Agios Panteleimon is the most notable icon among the several in the collection.
The Municipality of Kalavryta is home to numerous significant historical, archaeological, and religious sites and monuments, including the Archaeological Site of Ancient Lous, which includes the temple of Artemis and Mycenaean tombs; the Place of Sacrifice of the Kalavrytines, which features the sculpture of the Kalavrytine Mana; the historic Primary school; the Holy Monastery of Agia Lavra, where the banner of the 21st revolution was raised; the Holy Monastery of the Great Cave; the Holy Monastery of Makellaria; the Holy Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Vlasia; and numerous other small and large monuments from antiquity to the present day.
