The archeological museum of Volos is located by the seafront promenade of Volos inside the park of Anavros. The various collections are presented as follows
Built in 1909 thanks to a contribution from Alexios Athanasakis, who was originally from the Pelion town of Portaria, the Archaeological Museum of Volos was established. The Archaeological Society's engineer, A. Angelidis, created the building's construction plan, and architect, I.P. Scout, carried out the actual construction.
The museum is situated inside Anavros Park, close to Volos' waterfront promenade. The need for the museum to expand was made urgent by a number of archeological discoveries from the surrounding region. In 2004, this long-standing requirement was finally met.
The museum's collections include:
- Collection of Paleolithic findings from Thessaly region.
- Neolithic hall
- Two rooms with representations of tombs
- Gold jewellery collection
- Collection of written tombstones from the area of Demitriada
- Collections of relief tombstones and votive columns
- Collection of clay bronze and glass vessels from all periods
- Collection of coins from Thessaly.
