10 day programme for when you visit Nafplio

1st day: Go for a walk around the city.

2nd day: You can visit the archaeological museum. It is housed in an old stone building built by the Venetians and used as a place to store arms and ammunition. 

The oldest exhibit of the museum is a complex of palaeolithic plates dating from 32000 BC to 21000 BC. There are also objects from the cave of Franchthi in Hermionida, pottery, jewellery, gems, weapons, tools, utensils of gold, silver, copper, alabaster, ivory, semi-precious stones and figurines made of obsidian, copper, stone and clay.

3rd day: You can go up to Palamidi on foot. There are about 900 steps. It is quite a good exercise.

4rth day: You can visit the famous ancient theatre of Epidaurus and the Asclepeion.

Epidaurus was considered to be the birthplace of Apollo's son Asclepius the healer and was also known for its sanctuary situated about 8 Km away from the town of Epidaurus. 

The Asclepeion was the most celebrated healing center fo the classical world. To find out the right cure for their ailments, people spent a night in the enkoimeteria, a big sleeping hall. In their dreams the God would advise them what they had to do to be healthy again. There was also a guest house with 160 guestrooms. The ancient theatre was of unique symmetry and beauty. The theater has exceptional acoustics and can host 14000 spectators.

5th day: You can spot and admire the most important buildings of the town. The two mosques with the elaborate domes and minarets reminding the Ottoman Empire.

The Armansberg's residence, a Venetian house rebuilt in 1831 where the Bavarian Count Ludwig Joseph von Armansberg once lived.

6th day: You can find some significant churches for example. Agios Spyridon: From the early 1700s it encases one of the Greek history's famous bullet holes. On Sunday in 1831 Greece's first governor was on his way to mass in his church. The bullet that allegedly shot him got stuck in the church wall.

Agios Georgios and the royal throne: The Nafplio Cathedral built at the beginning of the century which was later converted by the Turks into a mosque.

Naos Panagia: Built in the 1400s and the church of Nafplio's patron saint, Agios Anastasios.
The catholic church and the Franks: The Franks occupied Nafplion from 1212-1388. It is also called Frankoklisia. It was converted into a mosque by the Turks. King Otto gave the church to the Catholics.
The church for the sick and poor: Agioi Apostoli, a small chapel built by the Venetians.

7th day: You can go shopping, buy some of the local products: wine, olive oil, herbs, dried oregano, saffron, mastic, pasteli, tea, olive soap and honey.

8th day: You can hire a boat to visit Bourtzi. The Venetians built the small fortress Bourtzi, originally part of the city's defences and thick chains ran from the castle to the mainland in order to prevent enemy ships from docking. Between 1865-1935 it was the executioner's residence. It later became a hotel/restaurant.

Small boats head out to the fortress. The trip lasts a couple of minutes. The entrance is free while the boat trip costs 4,5 euro.
9th day: Visit the Folklore museum. It has great costumes, furniture, musical instruments, jewelry and tools. You can also visit the Komboloi museum. It has a shop on the ground floor and a museum on the second floor. Both of which are filled with beautiful Kombolois.

Komboloi is a string of beads made of amber, mastic, ivory and coral.
10th day: There are many famous beaches. If you travel during the summer you can visit them every day. If the temperature is low you just admire them. If you travel in order to learn the history and culture of a country the best period to do it is from late November to early March.

On the following days each year the public museums offer a free entrance, so you can avoid this cost. The first Sunday of each month. From 1/11 till 31/3. On 28/10. The last weekend of September. On 6/3, 18/4 and 18/5.
