Chios Island Greece

  

Chios is situated in northern aegean sea notable for its ports of mastic gum 

Medieval villages and the 11th century monetary of Nea Moni are the main tourist attractions  

The principle town of the island and seat of the uncynically is Chios  

The island was the site of the Chios massacre in which thousands of Greeks were massacred expelled and enslaved by Ottoman troops during the Greek Was of independence in 1822.  

Chios town with a population of 30000 is build around the islands main harbor and medieval castle . The current castle was constructed during the time of Genoese and Ottoman rule. 

In the southern region of the island are the Mastichochoria the seven villages of Mesta ,  Pyrgi , Olymp , Kalamoti Vessia Lithi and Elato. The villages build between the 14th and 16th centuries have a carefully designed layout  with fortified gates and narrow streets to protect against the frequent aids by pirates. 

Directly in the center of the island in the 11th century monastery of Nea Moni  

The monastery was build with funds given by the Byzaintine Emperor Constatine IX 

The island climate is warm and moderate  

The Chios Basin is a hydrography sub unit of the Aegean Sea adjacent to the island of Chios. 

It is believed that Chios received its name from Chios the son of Poseidon by a nymph of the island Archeological research on Chios has found evidence of habitation dating back at least to the Neolithic era. 

Chios joined the rest of independent Greece offer the first Balkan was 1912  

The leading and most well-known local product is the Mastic its is solely produced in Chios. Chios has also a long tradition in wine and spirit making Chios is also an alive producing island and known for the vanities of its citrus fruits  

At the steep slopes of Prophet hill at the seaside settlement of Emperors as archaeological excavations have brought to the right ruins of a settlement dating back to the early years of the 8th century BC  

At a low hill of the sheltered bay of Fana are remains of the temple of Apollo of Fana Fanaios Apollon  

The site is considered the Delion of Chios  

Anavatos is a medieval now abandoned village 16km from Chios 

Created in the byzantine era the village was abandoned after the Massacre of Chios in 1822 and the earthquake of 1881  

Nea Moni is an 11th century Greek orthodox former monastery complex, now concert Provateia Oros Mt in the island`s interior approximately 15 kilometers from Chios town 

According to the tradition it was build on the location where  three monks Nikitas loannes and Josif miraculously found the icon of the Virgin Mary hanging from a branch of myrtle  

The monastery was early on end owed with privileges  

The Geonevese domination reduced its wealth but the ottoman era, when was subject directly to the Patriarch of Constantinople.
